About
In this course, students apply the language of art in producing fine art photographs. Primary experiences will center around the use of a 35mm single lens reflex camera, film processing, darkroom techniques, print manipulation, and the presentation of work. Technical skills evolve through the introduction of pinhole photography and contact printing. Experiences throughout the course will include composing, exposing, processing, enlarging images in the darkroom, and basic experiences in digital imaging.
Photography FAQ
What materials does the department cover?
The department provides the minimum materials (all photographic printing chemistry, a predetermined number of rolls of 35mm film (based on two rolls per assignment), photographic RC paper, and alternative processing chemistry) needed to complete the course work. If a student wishes to experiment with different types of photographic paper and film, it is the responsibility of the individual to purchase it through an external source.
Additional personal expenses can incur due to the following: Accidents due to carelessness, improper use of materials, or students who wish to develop their portfolio beyond the requirements of the course.
Does the school have 35mm cameras to borrow?
Yes. We do have roughly 20-30 working cameras so we do not "REQUIRE" that you have your own 35mm camera! Keep in mind that there are 80+ students registered this year for photography classes. Borrowing equipment is a possibility, though it becomes the students responsibility to strictly adhere to all checkout and return policies. If a student does not comply with the rules then his/her ability to check equipment out will become limited.
Should I have my own 35mm camera?
If you feel like you'll be pursuing Photography for a while, I would definitely recommend getting one. As stated in the earlier in the previous question, our department has a limited amount of cameras available and a lot of students. Having a camera of our own allows you to have more freedom with your time and your work versus working on a time limit to ensure all students get their work done.
Where can I find/purchase a 35mm camera?
First thing I always recommend is to check with family and friends. Most of the time you'll find a camera in someone else's possession that's currently gathering dust in a closet. If you've exhausted all possible relations and friends, then go out and buy one.
I personally purchase a majority of our 35mm SLR cameras through ebay.com (we have a majority Pentax K1000 in our stores) however other options are KEH.com, B&HPhoto.com, and Service Photo (Baltimore). If you have any more specific questions about what camera you should purchase, you can always shoot me an email or check in with before in class.
